5 Approaches for Empowering Learners with Dyslexia

Dyslexia is often defined as a language-based learning disability. This makes it hard for students with dyslexia to comprehend written text and express themselves with pencil and paper. Suzanne Feit, National Training Consultant, shows you how to positively influence students who have dyslexia by utilizing technology and applying these five approaches:

1. Use text-to-speech to help with phonemic awareness, phonics and decoding challenges
2. Use the highlighting and extracting main idea features to help students organize their thoughts
3. Use the Dyslexic font to help students process text when writing and reading
4. Provide easy access to definitions, synonyms and syllabication to support comprehension
5. Integrate word lists, vocabulary lists and word prediction to support writing at higher levels
