Help Students Overcome or Minimize Barriers to Test-taking

Test_Accommodations_Alternate-AssessmentTest Accommodations for Students who Struggle with Reading and Language Skills

Kurzweil 3000 has long been used as a test taking accommodation and has even been named as an approved accommodation in these states. Why is this? One of the primary accommodations requested for both classroom and high-stakes tests is for the test to be read aloud for the learner. This is a terrific accommodation to ensure we assess what the student knows about the topic or subject at hand and not simply prove that they cannot read at or on grade level. However, having tests read by proctors present a number of serious drawbacks. Most importantly, it is extremely labor intensive to have tests read aloud to individuals or small groups of students. Second, it is a very time consuming and fatiguing means of test delivery for both the proctor and the students. One must also consider the student who “gets it” on the first reading, but then must sit through one, or more, re-readings of the same materials while others process the information – what does the early finisher do? A final consideration is the consistency with which a test is read to students. For validity, we all want the test read the same way for all students. This is very nearly impossible with multiple proctors reading tests across multiple individuals or groups. Kurzweil 3000-firefly can address all four of these test-taking considerations, and more.

Take some time to learn more about test taking with Kurzweil 3000-firefly, how it addresses the issues noted above, and how other features can be utilized to support students in testing environments.

Minimizing Barriers to Assessments for Students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities

For other students, having tests read aloud is just the tip of the iceberg. How can you overcome test taking barriers for students with moderate to severe disabilities? The simple answer: practice, practice, practice. Using tools, such as Classroom Suite Primary Skills Builders, allows you to create accessible assessment activities that are aligned to Common Core State Standards—and easily monitor students’ progress. Students can practice independently, at their own pace, and master specific skills they are struggling with.
